Why I won’t be backing Faugheen if he runs at Cheltenham

By on March 5, 2020

I’ve seen Faugheen tipped in a few places as an antepost selection for either the Marsh Novices’ Chase or the RSA Novices’ Chase (he’s currently entered into both).

I can see why he would be fancied.

He’s on a 3 run winning streak including TWO Grade 1 Novice Chases on home soil this season.

And he has Cheltenham form having won a grade 1 novices’ hurdle in 2014 and more impressively the Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy in 2015.

But I was reading an article by the great Ben Aitken (you should definitely check out the full article here) and his age is a major worry.

Only one horse aged 11yo+ has won a Non-Handicap Graded Chase at the last 22 festivals. And NO horses aged 12+ have managed it.

As Ben says:

“National Hunt greats such of Cue Card, Kauto Star, Sizing Europe, Moscow Flyer, Edredon Bleu and See More Business all failed to win at the festival as aging 12yo’s, with 10 of those 18 12yo’s actually finishing Pulled-Up.

It is an ultra-tough environment for aging legs to get the better of younger competitors that are just reaching their peak and as much as I’d love to see him do it I’ll always come back to the old adage of ‘sentimentality in betting generally leads you to the poor house’.”

Something to think about if you were tempted by Faugheen.

Remember there’s still time to get your 75% discount to Cleeve Racing for Cheltenham.

You can get all their bets for the Festival as well as the Grand National Meeting for just a tenner.

They’ve made £3,284.60 over the past 5 festivals to £20 stakes so fingers’ crossed they can do it again and well be a few hundred quid richer at the end of the 4 days.

Cleeve are one of the good guys in the online tipster scene.

They are rated 4.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot and have been inducted into the ‘Hall of Fame’ at the Smart Betting Club.

They’ve managed this because of the profits they have accrued over the past decade giving out betting advice.

So getting their tips for a whole month for just £10 is a no-brainer.
