Never seen such stamina for a novice…

Our Duke absolutely tore it up to win the the BoyleSports Irish Grand National today.

I’ve never seen such stamina for a novice.

Unfortunately I didn’t back it as it failed on most of the trends and I thought it had a question mark over its jumping.

But how wrong I was.

It was sent off the 9-2 favourite despite running in his first ever handicap and running for just the fourth time over fences.

But he never looked in any real danger.

He’s now been cut to 14-1 from 25-1 for next year’s Gold Cup, with the current champion already in the same yard.

Jockey Robbie Power said…

“He is a hell of a good horse. He is very, very good.

He made a few novicey little mistakes, but full credit to all the team at Commonstown.

Jessie has done some job to train this horse to win an Irish National on only his fourth start over fences.

Once he got a good view of his fences and got plenty of light we were going to be happy. He just travelled so well everywhere, he is just a very good horse.”

Trainer Jessica Harrington added …

“It’s unbelievable, I can hardly believe it myself.

He’s a novice, that was only his fourth run over fences but it just went like copybook the whole way.

Robert was convinced he would stay and my only worry was the ground, but he absolutely loved it.

He’ll go nowhere else this season, that was the plan and it has worked.

We all have to get there, but he looks a Gold Cup horse.

That’s why he didn’t go to Cheltenham this year, as we wanted to wait and go to the Gold Cup next year.

We’ll keep him and Sizing John apart and see what happens.

I haven’t raced him much and he has very few runs under his belt.”

He’s definitely one to keep an eye on and he’s sure to go on to greater things.

As I said he has stamina for days.
