3 key Cheltenham stats you need to know…

By on March 12, 2018

Cheltenham begins tomorrow and I have 3 key stats you’ll want to be aware of.

The stats come courtesy of Ben Aitken over at NTF (check out NTF here).

(All stats come from last 6 Cheltenham festivals.)

1. 33 of the 34 Grade 1 Chase winners recorded a win on 1 of their last 3 starts.

When it comes to narrowing down the class 1 chase fields this is definitely the stat you want to start with.

If a horse hasn’t won in its previous 3 starts you’ll definitely want to cross them off your shortlist.

2. 96 of the 100 NON-HANDICAP race winners ran in a NON-HANDICAP race last time out.

When it comes to narrowing down the non-handicap fields this is definitely one stat you want to remember.

Making the step up from Handicap company to Non-Handicap company is an extremely difficult thing to do at The Cheltenham Festival.

3. Only TWO of the 138 horses to try and win a Grade One off the back of a break of 24 days or less have been successful.

We all know fitness is important in the big races at Cheltenham but it’s equally as important to have had adequate rest.

Those runners returning within 3½ weeks of their latest run  have really struggled to make an impact in the G1 Cheltenham Festival races.

These 3 stats are an excellent starting point when narrowing down the fields.

Hopefully they should steer you clear of the no-hopers.
